Wrinkles and fine lines are the most telling signs of aging. Wrinkles happen as an effect of a variety of factors including sun exposure, alcohol consumption, lifestyle, genetics, etc. Wrinkles can appear as early as adolescence. They develop in different areas of the face, neck, chest, hands, above the knees, and around the elbows.

Causes

Wrinkles are divided into 2 categories: unavoidable wrinkles (appearing as we age) and preventable wrinkles (caused by sun exposure and lifestyle habits).

  • Advanced Age: As people age, the skin loosens and develops fine lines. The subcutaneous tissue such as fat, muscle, and bone also decreases in time. This contributes to loose, sagging skin, which worsens skin folding and creasing.

  • Sun damage: UV rays from the sun penetrate into the skin. People who have photo-damaged skin from excessive sun exposure eventually see a decline in skin firmness and elasticity. People with fairer skin types are more susceptible to sun damage.

Types of Wrinkles

  • Wrinkles Caused by Expression: Expression wrinkles are caused by facial movements over time such as frowning, smiling, and other facial expressions.

  • Elastic Wrinkles: This type of wrinkle is caused by the reduction of facial volume and skin elasticity, due to the natural aging process. Wrinkles can get worse by excessive sun exposure, poor skin care, improper diet and other environmental factors.

  • Atrophic Wrinkles: A more severe type of wrinkle that is also caused by loss of facial volume and skin elasticity. The creases can get worse with the use of steroid creams and other medications.

  • Gravitational Wrinkles: The wrinkles are formed by gravity and worsen by the skin's natural loss of collagen and elastin.

  • Compression Wrinkles: This type of wrinkle can be caused by sleeping on one's side or stomach. Facial skin is pushed against the pillow or mattress, causing permanent folds/creases over time. Compression wrinkles can be avoided by sleeping on your back or with the use of a special pillow.

Wrinkle Areas

Facial Wrinkles

Facial wrinkles are the most noticeable and consistent. Some common kinds of wrinkles in the face include:

  • Crow's feet: Wrinkles crease around the outer corner of the eyes. These are caused by facial muscles around the eyes, sun exposure and the natural aging process.

  • Forehead wrinkles: The wrinkles are also caused by facial expressions. They appear as horizontal lines across the forehead or the two vertical lines between eyebrows when frowning.

  • Lip wrinkles: These wrinkles appear as lip lines, smoker lines, nasolabial folds, smile lines and marionette lines.

Body Wrinkles

Wrinkles can appear anywhere on the body, especially the neck, chest area, hands, above the knees and elbows. The main factors that lead to the formation of wrinkles are advanced age and sun exposure.

Wrinkle Treatments

If you've noticed signs of aging skin or are worried about the development of fine lines, our medical spa offers a variety of treatment options that can rejuvenate your skin and prevent wrinkles from developing.

  • Botox & Dysport: These injectables are FDA-approved. They paralyze muscles that are responsible for facial expressions. Botox and Dysport can temporarily smooth moderate to severe lines between the brows, forehead and crow’s feet in people aged 18 to 65 years old.

  • Dermal Fillers: The procedure fills soft tissues to add volume and smooth out wrinkles. The result is a smoother and younger appearance. At Lazaderm Laser and Aesthetics, we offer different types of fillers to meet your personal needs. A free consultation with one of our providers will help determine which ones work best for your aesthetic goals.

  • Laser Skin Resurfacing: Our Erbium laser resurfacing ablates the dead layers of the skin to reduce facial wrinkles and scars. During the healing process, new skin cells form and create a tighter and more youthful appearance. The procedure is not recommended for patients with dark skin tones due to the risk of hyperpigmentation.

  • Chemical Peels: These treatments are considered a skin resurfacing technique. Our aesthetician applies a solution to your skin to exfoliate the top layers. Depending on the condition of the skin, you will receive different levels of exfoliation - light, medium, or deep.

  • Facial Treatment: Facials are safe, quick, and suitable for most people. At our medical spa, we offer a 30-minute HydraFacial treatment that nourishes and moisturizes the skin. The result is a soft and hydrated look. Our aestheticians highly recommend pairing our facial with a Dermaplaning or Microdermabrasion for a glowing appearance.

  • Microdermabrasion: The procedure stimulates collagen production while reducing wrinkles, acne and dark spots. Our provider will use very fine microcrystals (or diamond tips) to remove the upper layer of the skin. This procedure is ideal for those who want to improve their overall skin condition and have minor resurfacing needs.

  • PDO Thread Lift: This procedure is designed to lift mid-face, jowls and the neck. The provider places textured PDO threads underneath the skin and pull them upward. This process helps reduce the appearance of hanging or sagging skin while smoothing out gravitational wrinkles. PDO Thread Lift also encourages the production of collagen in the treated area, which is the underlying cause of wrinkles.

  • Microneedling with Radiofrequency: Our Secret RF utilizes tiny needles and heat to improve issues such as skin laxity, fine lines and wrinkles. Patients that desire to improve on superficial concerns are the best candidates for this treatment.

  • BroadBand Light Treatment: Broadband Light Therapy is the world’s most powerful IPL (Intense Pulse Light) device on the market. BBL uses intense pulse light to penetrate deeper cells and stimulate the production of collagen, promoting the skin’s natural rejuvenation process.
