Stretch marks are a type of scar that appears when the skin stretches or shrinks quickly. The abrupt changes cause collagen and elastin to burst, resulting in stretch marks.
People often view their stretch marks as concerns that lower confidence.
Causes
Common causes of stretch marks include:
Pregnancy: the increase in weight during pregnancy causes the skin to stretch quickly.
Puberty: some teens experience growth spurts during puberty. This causes stretch marks to develop.
Rapid weight loss or gain
Weight training when you have rapid muscle growth
Symptoms
During the early phase, stretch marks tend to be red, purple, pink or reddish-brown in color. They can also feel itchy at times.
Gradually, as the color fades, they appear as white stretch marks on your skin.
Treatment of Stretch Marks
Stretch marks sometimes act like scars: they are hard to remove completely, especially by natural or home remedies. They don't fade over time, either. Some patients can see results after one treatment and others require a combination of different treatments to get the results they are looking for.
Stretch mark creams, lotions and gels: This is the most popular home-remedy option. Creams typically only work on early stretch marks or while they are forming. You will have to continually apply the products for weeks to see the results.
If you have more persistent and mature stretch marks, these treatments might be necessary to help you solve your concern.
Chemical peel: Chemical peel removes the outer layers, to reveal a smoother and tightening skin area.
Laser resurfacing: Laser skin resurfacing uses an ablative laser to target the treated area. The result is a smoother surface. The Erbium laser resurfacing also stimulates the production of new collagen, resulting in stronger tissues and tighter skin layers.
Microdermabrasion: Removes the problematic layer of skin cells, helps oxygenate the skin, and stimulates new collagen growth.
Microneedling with Radiofrequency: The microneedling treatment, accompanied by radio frequency, stimulates the healing process of the damaged skin layers and the production of collagen deep in the skin.
