Age Spots

Age spots, also known as dark spots, liver spots or sun spots, are often the result of sun damage. Age spots are mostly found in the face, hand and body parts that get the most exposure to UVA/UVB exposures. They vary in size, shape and color.

Symptoms

Age spots can affect people of all skin types but are most common in adults over 40, those who have fair skin, and people who get frequent sun exposure or use a tanning bed.

Age spots:

  • Range from light brown to black

  • Appear in areas with the most sun exposure

  • Range from the size of a freckle to 1/2 inches across

Causes

Age Spots are caused by the overproduction of pigment (melanin). Skin areas that have high sun exposure or other forms of Ultra Violet (UV) light such as tanning beds are more likely to develop age spots.

When to See a Doctor

Age spots can look similar to cancerous growths. Consult your doctor for diagnosis if your spots:

  • Are black and increases in size

  • Are bleeding

  • Have an unusual combination of color

True age spots don't require medical care, but they won't fade away naturally. They are a sign of excess sun exposure. Applying sunscreen can be a preventative way to avoid the development of spots.

If you want to lighten or remove your age spots for cosmetic reasons, there are some non-invasive treatments available for you at Lazaderm Laser & Aesthetics.

Treatment for Age Spots

Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is a proven method to rejuvenate skin and help fade spots. It ablates and removes the outermost skin layer, revealing smoother and healthier skin. However, laser resurfacing may not be ideal for darker skin types.

Intense Pulse Light Treatment

Various forms of light therapy can be used to combat dark spots. Broadband Light Therapy is the world's most powerful IPL. It applies a range of light to penetrate the deeper layers to target melanin and break up the pigmented areas.

Microdermabrasion

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure that can gently exfoliate the top layer of the skin. Follow-up treatments are recommended to retain your aesthetic goals. After the treatment, patients must apply sunscreen and follow a skin care routine to maintain results.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels remove the top damaged layer of the skin and help fade brown spots. Our aestheticians recommend patients avoid sun exposure and apply sunscreen to lower the risk of spots returning. Learn More.
