What is Microdermabrasion?

microdermabrasion-in-chandler-az

Microdermabrasion is one of the most natural ways to exfoliate the skin without the use of harsh chemicals. The process works by using very fine microcrystals (or diamond tips) to remove the upper layer of the skin. Our aesthetician at Lazaderm Laser and Aesthetics uses microdermabrasion to exfoliate your dead skin cells, which help the production/turnover rate of new skin, resulting in firmer, more youthful-looking skin.

At our Medspa, we are committed to bringing results, unlike any others. We provide options for all skin types and treatment plans based on your skin needs and goals. Book a free consultation with our aesthetic doctors to make your first move to your ideal skin.

What does Microdermabrasion do?

  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles

  • Eliminate or minimize the enlarged pores.

  • Helps with acne and acne scars

  • Improve skin tones and skin texture. Give a radiant look to your skin.

  • Hyperpigmentation. By treating hyperpigmentation, microdermabrasion can brighten and rejuvenate tired skin.

Though mostly used to treat the facial area, microdermabrasion can also be performed on other parts of the body such as the chest or the back.

Microdermabrasion Treatment

Microdermabrasion with Crystals

Our sodium bicarbonate crystals use compressors to vacuum particles to suction up dead skin. Crystal microdermabrasion ablates the skin tissue by combining heat and friction.

Microdermabrasion with a Diamond Tip Wand

The microdermabrasion with diamonds is more popular currently. The process is similar to crystal microdermabrasion but can be more accurate.

The fine diamonds adhere to the end of the microdermabrasion wand to scrape across small sections of the skin and remove dead, damaged skin tissue. Once the skin has been exfoliated, a vacuum tool will be used to suction away dead cells.

Microdermabrasion FAQ

Does Microdermabrasion hurt? Is it safe?

Microdermabrasion is pain-free and is very safe as it is not using any chemicals or laser resurfacing, which often calls for downtime. Microdermabrasion ablates the skin gently to address wrinkles, skin discoloration and skin texture by removing the top layer of skin. Unlike dermabrasion, microdermabrasion only treats the top layers of the epidermis so there is hardly any discomfort involved. At Lazaderm, we use only diamond tips or sodium bicarbonate crystals. It doesn’t require numbing cream for the treatment.

Is there any downtime with Microdermabrasion?

There is no downtime associated with microdermabrasion. You can go about your daily activities and apply makeup post-treatment.

The peeling of dry, dead flaky skin can happen within a week of procedure and can be relieved or resolved by using moisturizer. You might also notice that your skin gets a little red but this will resolve very quickly. To maximize the benefits of the procedure, use a cold compress, anti-inflammatory cream, gentle cleanser and serum to keep your skin elastic and hydrated. Stay away from exfoliating products, acne skin care and harsh chemicals such as benzoyl peroxide, alpha hydroxy acid, beta hydroxy acid, retinol for one or two days. Avoid rubbing, scratching or picking the flaky skin. We would recommend you use sunblock immediately after the treatment to avoid sunburn and limit sun exposure. Sunbathing or tanning products should be avoided for at least seven days for the healing process.

How often should I get Microdermabrasion?

Depending on your skin types and skin goals, microdermabrasion can be done at different frequent rates. As the gentle nature of the treatment, you can have frequent treatments to exfoliate, brighten and remove dead skin cells. Our aesthetics doctor recommends you repeat the treatment once every 2 to 4 weeks for skin improvement and maintenance. You may start seeing the results in the third microdermabrasion and the best skin results can be seen between 6 to 12 treatment sessions. A series of microdermabrasion sessions is especially effective for patients with skin discoloration and acne-prone problems.

Am I a candidate for microdermabrasion?

Healthy patients who are concerned with aging signs, light lines and wrinkles, uneven texture, sun-damaged skin, and acne might be good candidates for microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion might not be right for:

  • For those seeking treatment for deep scars or wrinkles, birthmarks, or tattoos, microdermabrasion might not achieve your desired results. Chemical peel or light/laser treatments might be a better option for more intensive treatment. Therefore, depending on your skin concern and treatment areas, our skin care expert might recommend more effective alternatives to ensure your aesthetic goal.

  • Rosacea sufferer. People with rosacea have red and sensitive skin so they should avoid using any kind of exfoliation or facial scrub.

  • Those with skin infections or other skin irritation need to consult doctors before going ahead with the procedure.

  • Acne sufferers taking Accutane should seek for doctor’s approval first.

  • Pregnant women

  • Those who have had recent procedures that left their skin too sensitive including filler injection, Botox, laser treatment or medical conditions.

How long does a Microdermabrasion treatment take?

It takes approximately half an hour for a microdermabrasion procedure, with additional time needed for additional areas.

Can microdermabrasion be performed on other places besides the face?

Yes. Microdermabrasion can also be a great treatment for the hands, neck and décolleté areas.

Can I get both microdermabrasion and a chemical peel or laser/rejuvenation treatment on the same day?

Yes, you can get both treatments on the same day, but the microdermabrasion must be performed first. The combination of procedures will likely give you better and longer-lasting results.

Is DIY Microdermabrasion At Home Machine Effective?

At-home microdermabrasion might offer a cheaper option to address uneven skin color. However, the microdermabrasion machine for home use doesn’t contain as strong suction power as those used at cosmetic centers.

Therefore, if you are looking for improvement in the appearance of skin discoloration, sun damage, age spots, acne, etc., DIY microdermabrasion will not get you the desired result.
